You’re not a true gamer unless you know about Final Fantasy, the Japanese science fantasy roleplaying video games created by Hironobu Sakaguchi and developed by Square Enix.
Since the first game was released in 1987, the Final Fantasy franchise went on to become a cultural phenomenon with its latest release being Dissidia Final Fantasy NT last January 11, 2018.
Die hard fans of the game, however, have been looking forward to one thing since last year—Final Fantasy 16.
While Square Enix has yet to release a statement about this much-anticipated release, here’s what we know from the rumors circulating in the gaming world:
Final Fantasy 16 may not be released in the next 2-3 years
Square Enix hasn’t talked about the game yet and has been working on another project, so we cannot expect for Final Fantasy 16 to be released this year. In terms of platform, the game may be launched for next-gen consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Scarlett that are due to be released next year.
Clues for the next release
While Square Enix has been mum about the release of Final Fantasy 16, the developer has been giving subtle clues to set the expectations of the fans for its next release.
For one, fans can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that Final Fantasy 16 will not have any mecha at all, a concern for gamers in Final Fantasy 15. Naoki Yoshida, Final Fantasy 14’s director said that the company should focus more on fantasy elements, which is what Square Enix might do with the 16th installment of the game. The game is also likely to be a single-player title because of how well this MMO format has been doing for the previous titles.
Expectations of fans
Fans also have their expectations when it comes to the release of Final Fantasy 16, one of which is to have a better open world experience than Final Fantasy 15. With the success of the 15th installment, fans are also expecting better characters, storytelling and an excellent plot. These features made Final Fantasy 15 such a huge hit to gamers, so Square Enix is expected to come up with better features for the 16th installment.

Fans are looking forward to a bigger, better setting, one that will give them more variety and thrill when playing the game. Final Fantasy 15 fell short in this area by offering just one play area, so diehard gamers are expecting an improvement for Final Fantasy 16.

Final Fantasy 15 introduced a new and better combat system, which will likely continue with the 16th installment along with a few refinements here and there.
Since the first Final Fantasy game was released 32 years ago, it has never failed to wow its diehard fans.
Although there have been highs and lows for the game, it has remained one of the most iconic roleplaying games in the world for many years now. Whether or not Final Fantasy 16 will be released this year, only Square Enix can tell.
But fans will surely have something to look forward to in the near future.
