The Islamic State claimed responsibility for a suicide attack targeting a lawmaker in Pakistan’s southwest Baluchistan province on Friday. 25 people were killed in the violence but Abdul Ghafoor Haideri, the deputy leader of Pakistan’s Senate, survived the attack in Mastung with cuts and bruises.
The lawmaker’s driver and aide were killed, according toThe New York Times.
Haideri told a local news channel that he could not speculate on the motive for the attack. ISIS took responsibility on its official Amaq media agency.
“I was sitting in the front seat when the strong explosion occurred,” he said. “The windshield of my vehicle broke and the door was destroyed. Broken glass and splinters hit me in the hand but thank God I did not suffer any major injury. … I can’t say why the blast (happened) or what led to it.”
