No definite answer there. Although the rumor mill is rife with bits of tantalizing news about what people can expect from this upcoming installment. But more on that later.

If you’ve been living under the rock or have just managed to remain impervious to the huge presence of PC games, here’s a really short primer on what The Sims is.

A tale of simulation games and expansion packs

The Sims is a video game series that simulates real-life situations and scenarios. Developed by Maxis and sold by Electronic Arts (EA), it is one of the most successful PC games of all time. Nearly 200 million copies of the franchise has sold worldwide.

The very first game off of the series was released in February 2020. It went on to have seven expansion packs and two deluxe editions. The Sims 2 followed in September 2004, with eight expansion packs and nine stuff packs. The Sims 3 arrived in April 2009 and it had eleven expansion packs and nine stuff packs.

The latest version, The Sims 4 came in September 2014 and, as of January 2018, Maxis has released five-game packs, four expansion packs, and twelve stuff packs have been released for it.

Which brings us to the much-anticipated The Sims 5.

Modern and available on more platforms

So far, whispers on the gaming grapevine point to Sims 5 having multiplayer gameplay and VR support. It will also be available on more platforms. Including the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X.

RadioTimes also reported on a few more exciting features to potentially look out for in Sims 5.

As a brand new numbered entry, The Sims 5 will not only have improved graphics but a bucketload of new features. Not much is known yet, but the game has been confirmed to have online features – meaning you’ll be able to visit your friend’s creations for the very first time. There is also hope that content cut from The Sims 4 will return in this sequel, including an open world, vehicles and full neighbourhood customisation.

Is it coming in 2020?

Maxis and EA has been keeping mum about the release date for the fifth installment in the franchise. People were expecting EA to share some info at last year’s Play Conference but they remain tight-lipped about it.

An official announcement and a trailer will precede the release so until those drop, it’s most likely anyone’s guess.
