As soon as Xbox One X launched in November, players reported that they could play The Witcher 3 at 60 FPS. But the Xbox One X update made the players choose between either getting 60 FPS or going for 30 FPS in 4K.

If you download the update for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on your Xbox One X, you will see in the display menu a new option where you can choose between ‘4K Mode’ and ‘Performance Mode’.

Choose Between ‘4K Mode’ and ‘Performance Mode’ On Xbox One X

The difference between the first mode and the second one is that 4K mode will let you play the game at full graphics, but with stable 30 FPS. You will see that the update brought HDR support, enhanced shadows, texture filtering, ambient occlusion, and higher resolution texture. (https://valorhealthcare.com/)

The Performance Mode will lower the visual effects and will keep the game at 60 FPS by using dynamic resolution scaling. It’s actually the same thing Bethesda used for their Fallout 4 on the Xbox One X update: they made the frames stay at 60 FPS by sliding them smoothly from 1080p to 4K.

It’s not a big difference from what you’ve experienced until now. Looking at the same scenes from the game, we can see that 4K brings some sharpness and details of light, which add a nice touch to the game. But between a few beams of light or a sharper image and the 60 FPS mode, we would rather choose the latter. Especially when you want to see your character naturally moving while you’re wreaking havoc upon your enemies.

The Witcher 3 already has an update for the Xbox One X and will soon release an update that will enable HDR support for those who play the game on PlayStation 4 Pro.
