September 2017 has been the month when three new iPhones got launched: the iPhone 8, the iPhone 8 Plus and the newest flagship, the iPhone X that marked the 10th anniversary since the first iPhone got released.

The iPhone X (which is pronounced as ‘iPhone ten’) has a lot of new and interesting features, such as an edge-to-edge design, the Face ID system that replaced the Touch ID fingerprint and a lot more.

But many people have asked themselves what happened with the number 9? Looking at the numbers, we have iPhone 8 and then it jumps to iPhone X (ten) – a good reason to mark the 10-year anniversary. So, will there be an iPhone 9 in 2018? Here’s what we know.

Naming the iPhones of 2018

There might be a possibility of naming the successors of the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus to iPhone 8s and iPhone 8s Plus. Or maybe they will be called iPhone 9 and 9 Plus.

The next generation of iPhone X might the name iPhone Xs, iPhone XI, iPhone 11 or second-generation iPhone X.

But Apple did hint that in 2018 there will be only 2 models, so the iPhone X was a one-time only device released only for the anniversary, which makes sense.

The Design of the Future iPhones

Ming-Chi Kuo, the KGI Securities analyst that has leaked accurate information so far on many Apple devices, said that we might see three iPhone models next year that will come with full-screens (5.8-inch, 6.5-inch OLED displays and 6.1-inch LCD display). The last model will be aimed at the low-end or mid-range markets, and the first one will focus on the high-end market.

The LCD model might also come with a metal body and no wireless charging, according to a source that is ‘privy to the company’s product designs’.

All three models will have the TrueDepth camera system that’s available on the iPhone X at the moment, so users will have Face ID and Animojis too on those devices.

As for specs, we will definitely see a new chipset, probably one called A12, that will bring battery life enhancements and more performance.

The devices will also be water resistant.

Release Date

Usually Apple keeps tight schedules and unveil their iPhones in the first half of September 2018, perhaps on 4-5 or 11-12 September, looking back at the last years’ launch dates.

If you’re planning to get one, buy it at the end of September, when they go on sale.

Price

The iPhone X was the most expensive iPhone – £999 (64 GB version) and £1,149 (256 GB version).

The iPhone 8 was £699 (64 GB model), £849 (256 GB model), the iPhone 8 Plus was £799 (64 GB version) and £949 (256GB model).

Next year’s iPhones might be around or over the prices of 2017 devices, but they might try to keep them below £1,000, to actually get them sold.

A mid-range future iPhone Plus of 2018 might be available starting at £649 to £749.
