Nothing – no device, no software, no game – is safe from people who wish to do other people harm. It appears that Minecraft is also being targeted by hackers. According to cybersecurity firm, Symantec, Minecraft players need to be concerned about a potential Minecraft add-on that the Google Play Store offers.

The add-on is embedded with a Trojan malware code called Sockbot.

According to Symantec employee Shaun Aimoto, the flexible proxy topology would be able to make use of various network-based vulnerabilities that could go beyond the security boundaries.

Besides the letting the arbitrary network attacks, the infection could cause a plethora of denial of service attacks (DDoS).

Compromised Apps

It appears that eight of Minecraft-based apps have been compromised with the Trojan, which could mean up to 2.8 million Android devices are in trouble of being infected. Symantec notes that the most targeted countries include the U.S., Germany, Russia, the Ukraine and Brazil. To ensure user safety, Symantec has urged Google to remove the compromised apps to ensure the Minecraft mobile game isn’t a threat.

This isn’t the first case of infected apps in the Google Play Store, and Google needs to come up with a better security system to lower the number of apps uploaded to the system. After all, once an infected app is installed onto a device, they hide by using encryption to trick detection tools.

Therefore, users are urged to download their apps from a reputable source and look at the permissions of the apps. They are also urged to keep their software updated.
