Users that use assistive technologies will no longer be allowed to upgrade their Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 for free.
The official Microsoft webpage states on their Accessibility tab that they still offer the upgrade to Windows 10 at no cost for its assistive technologies, but that it will expire on 31 December.
We’ve known from the beginning that their offer will not last forever, as they have mentioned it in a statement. They also said that it will be publicly stated when they will bring to an end the accessibility-based upgrade and they have done it now, on their website.
In theory, not everyone can get the update – if they don’t need the assistive tech, they shouldn’t get the upgrade. But there is no system that can verify whether users need it or not, so anybody can use it, despite being immoral.
Get the Upgrade to Windows 10 With a Retail Product Key
There is a way of getting the upgrade as a freebie. You do remember that the previous free upgrade was available until July 2016. Well, if you have a Windows 7 or a Windows 8.1 product key, you can activate the installation for Windows 10, with one downside being that you must use a retail product key, not one that came preinstalled on a PC that you bought.
There are reports of people having tried retail keys (that have been previously used to install a copy of Windows), and the upgrading worked.
As Microsoft hasn’t made any public comment on this upgrade path, we don’t know if this upgrade for assistive technologies will also expire for those who try to use retail product keys.
But, if you want to get the new Windows OS, then you should consider using this path before the new year starts.
