Some of you might have seen the interview with Todd Howard hinting on the development of Elder Scrolls 6. He admitted that they have plans for the game and that they will need a lot of technology for developing it, ‘so it’s something that’s going to take a lot of time, what we have in mind for that game’.

The Elder Scrolls 6 – Is it in Development?

A year later, Howard changed his plans, saying that they are working on two major titles before ‘we’re gonna get to Elder Scrolls 6. TES 6 is not in dev while we work on [them]’.

The two major titles are of course The Evil Within 2 and Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus, so we believe that the Elder Scrolls 6 will be the next on the list for development.

But Bethesda usually announces their games when they’re almost ready to be released, so be sure to wait a long-long time before you hear anything official about Elder Scrolls 6. So, if they’ve already started the development we will perhaps see a teaser next year and a release in 2019 – best case scenario.

Bethesda Must Let Go of Skyrim

Another thing that might keep them from releasing a new Elder Scrolls game is Skyrim. It looks like the success this current game has prevents the team to look forward to creating a new game. They must let go of Skyrim and all its re-releases for different platforms and come up with a new and fresh vision to keep us hooked.

The Elder Scrolls 6 should have a new identity, take a new direction and should definitely not to be built in the shadow of its predecessor.

While we don’t know when Bethesda will start working on the game, we hope that they will come up with a whole new content.

  1. Article made a mistake, Evil Within 2 is by Tango Gameworks and Wolfenstein 2 is by Machine Games. They are both under the umbrella publishing company Bethesda Softworks, but not by developer Bethesda Game Studios like main line Elder Scrolls games and Fallout 3/Fallout 4. Evil Within and Wolfenstein are not the projects Bethesda Game Studios mentioned.

It’s POSSIBLE the projects are not both games, but safe to say at least one project is a game as Bethesda Game Studios did list an ad back in June to hire someone to help come up with monetization schemes for a AAA freemium game. It’s possible that the other project was VR though, which is now more or less done with Skyrim and Fallout 4 ported to VR, so maybe we only have one actual new game before Elder Scrolls 6.

The next game should give us the same fix as Fallout and Elder Scrolls do, and hopefully that can hold us over until an Elder Scrolls 6 game for PS5/PSVR2 and next iterations of Xbox and PC VR options. ES6 VR needs to look way better than Skyrim/Fallout 4 do. I also look forward to the next game fleshing out some of the features that Fallout 4 started but did not perfect, mainly settlement construction and governing. That would be amazing in Elder Scrolls but would have a long way to go to be what the game deserves.

There should also be more new gameplay improvements along the lines of Fallout 4’s jumping while sprinting and stable aim speed, new UI improvements like quick save and seeing items in containers without pausing. I also hope companion affinity and interaction evolves. If we get the same number of improvements for the next game as we did for Fallout 4, and then again for Elder Scrolls 6, Elder Scrolls 6 should be amazing, and that’s before VR considerations which I hope to see Elder Scrolls 6 launch with VR compatibility as opposed to separate purchases. Fallout 4 and Skyrim had to be remade for VR but Elder Scrolls 6 could be built from the ground up to support both VR and non-VR. Though if the games are too massive and buggy to risk it then I will be okay with that.
