Regional Mossos d’Esquadra officers working together with police partners from Belgium carried out dawn raids across Barcelona and nearby towns during an operation against radical Islamic terrorism and drug trafficking.

The group that was targeted is described as a “terror cell with international ramifications.”

As a result of the operation eight Moroccan men belonging to ISIS were held. Mossos d’Esquadra police chief Josep Lluis Trapero said that four of the arrested are believed to have links to those who organized the terror attacks at Brussels Airport and Maalbeek tube station. Some of the men had been in Brussels just two days before the attacks, that took the life of 32 people.

The men are aged between 31 and 39 and have lived in Catalonia for some time but they have also traveled around Europe.

Three weapons and £30,000 cash were seized during the operation.
