Brazilian police arrested on August, 11 two suspected supporters of the Islamic state on suspicion of planning an attack during the Olympic Games in Rio, reported Reuters. The detainees are Brazilians, but the police did not announce their names or any other details.
Before the operation on Thursday, 12 members of a criminal group, which had also planned attacks on the Olympics. They were detained in ten different states. According to authorities, they were not members of Daesh but have tried to join a jihadist group. Three others were questioned and released, said Brazilian Federal Police.
Brazil is not in direct conflict with known extremist groups. The government explained that the Olympic Games increase the risk of attack, especially because of the participation of countries who are fighting against “Islamic state.”
Supporters of the group have carried out attacks worldwide, reminds Reuters.
